The wish of an if

      The wish of an if
      Is a backwards future;
      Beyond the moment’s present use
      The grand seducer is seduced.
5     If in plain vagaries I am vain,
      In rich reality I’m just me.
      Forgive me, listeners
      If this mothering infant tongue
      Offends your sense:
10    Life is my only defense.
