Caedmon’s Hymn

Now singeth pitched praise
         of high-heaven’s Warden,
Mightiest Maker
         and His masterful mind-plans!
Works of the Wonder-Father
         who established each wonder
(Dear eternal Lord)
         and their foundations fathomed.

He earliest scraped,
         for all mankind’s sons,
The sky’s heaven-roof,
         O holy Creator;
Then made He middle-earth,
         this mankind-Warden,
Eternal Lord;
         and afterwards fashioned
Firm earth-folds for us,
         our Almighty Master.
